Profile
Fairbuilt Guitar Co has been serving musicians in Purcellville since 2000, combining custom instrument building with specialized repair expertise. Owner and luthier Ryan Phillips trained at the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery and brings decades of hands-on experience to both new construction and vintage restoration work.
The shop operates as a certified C.F. Martin warranty center since 1995, with Phillips developing deep expertise in addressing the specific issues these instruments develop over time. The repair department focuses heavily on vintage acoustic guitars, particularly pre-1950 Martins and Gibsons, alongside electric guitar work. Services range from standard setups and fretwork to complex procedures like neck resets, crack repairs, and bridge plate replacements.
On the building side, Fairbuilt crafts custom guitars and mandolins in various body styles using premium local and traditional tonewoods. Phillips draws inspiration from classic Martin and Gibson designs he’s restored over the years, incorporating modern refinements like beveled armrests. The shop’s team, including electric guitar specialist Susan Keeney, handles everything from routine maintenance to delicate vintage restorations, ensuring each instrument receives careful attention whether it’s a prized pre-war flattop or a working musician’s Telecaster.
