Profile
Thomas Harvey Classical Guitars brings over 25 years of luthier expertise to Baltimore’s classical guitar community, built on a remarkable family legacy that traces back to Gibson Guitar Company innovator Thaddeus McHugh. McHugh’s 1923 patents for the adjustable truss rod and bridge fundamentally changed guitar construction, and that commitment to craftsmanship has been passed down through generations.
Harvey specializes in handcrafted custom classical guitars styled after Hermann Hauser, using traditional Spanish heel construction and the finest available tonewoods. Each boutique instrument is built from a player’s perspective, with clients involved in every decision from wood selection to finish application. His full-service repair shop handles vintage guitar work and all aspects of instrument maintenance, working by appointment to provide dedicated attention to each guitar.
As a lifelong guitarist who learned repair work out of necessity before transitioning from performance to instrument building, Harvey understands what players need from their instruments. His workshop combines traditional European luthier techniques with modern materials like carbon fiber neck stabilizers, creating guitars designed to provide decades of service‚a philosophy his great-great-grandfather would recognize and approve of.
