Profile
RockinHorse Guitars operates as one of the few acoustic luthier schools on Massachusetts’ North Shore, where the art of traditional guitar building takes center stage. Specializing in acoustic steel string guitar construction, this Middleton workshop offers hands-on instruction in the complete guitar building process, from selecting tonewoods to applying final finishes.
The luthiers at RockinHorse guide students through custom boutique guitar builds, emphasizing detail-oriented craftsmanship in an environmentally controlled shop. Their approach begins with understanding each player’s musical style, then matching appropriate materials and body designs to achieve the desired tonal outcome. Each instrument requires approximately 200 hours to complete.
Working in both private and semi-private formats, the instruction covers traditional lutherie techniques including fretwork, setup, and all aspects of acoustic guitar construction. Students gain comprehensive experience with the tools and methods professional luthiers use, though power tool operation remains optional. The philosophy centers on patience and attention to detail, ensuring each builder completes a fully finished, playable instrument. RockinHorse encourages students to incorporate their own ideas throughout the build process, resulting in truly personalized custom guitars.
