Profile
Cunningham Guitars brings over 30 years of luthier expertise to the Edgewater area, led by Master Chief Musician (Ret.) Jim Cunningham. After spending 25 years as a guitarist with the United States Naval Academy Band, Cunningham built his reputation working alongside respected technicians at Fowler Music Service and Atlantic Woodworks, where he serviced instruments for jazz legends including Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Byrd.
As an authorized service center for Martin, Gibson, and KMC brands, Cunningham Guitars handles everything from routine guitar setup and fretwork to complex vintage guitar work and custom boutique guitar builds. The shop specializes in instrument repair and restoration across all guitar types, with finishing work handled by experienced cabinet maker Peter Paglia.
Beyond his repair bench, Cunningham serves as a guest instructor at Martin Taylor’s guitar retreats, teaching workshops on setup and maintenance alongside world-class guitarists. This combination of performing experience and technical skill means instruments receive attention from someone who understands both the mechanical and musical sides of guitar repair. Clients can arrange appointments to visit the home-based shop or use Brass On Ivory Music in Edgewater as a convenient drop-off location.
